NEW GLARUS – Early last Thursday morning (March 2nd) Thomas Schmid Sr. died at
his home in the southern part of the village, after being an invalid for several
months.

Thomas Schmid was the first white child born at New Glarus. He was the son of
Mr. and Mrs. Mathias Schmid who came here from Switzerland in August, 1845. He
was born on December 18, 1845 and baptized on January 2, 1846. He grew up among
the hardships of pioneer life. He was confirmed here by Reverend Zimmerman.

When he was nineteen years of age he enlisted in Company D, 9th Regiment of
Wisconsin. On September 15, 1864 he went with his regiment to Little Rock,
Arkansas. On June 7, 1865 he was discharged and came back to New Glarus.

In March 1868 he was married to Anna Hauser. He worked as a teamster and
drayman until 1886. Then they bought a farm in Exeter Township and lived there
for twelve years after which they came back to New Glarus to live.

Seven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Schmid, 3 daughters and 4 sons. One
daughter, Mrs. Sam Schneider preceded him in death.

On September 7, 1920 he became a helpless invalid after a stroke of paralysis.
Since then he failed gradually until March 2, when he passed away, in spite of
the loving care by wife and children. The surviving children are Mrs. John
Disch, Mrs. Fred Wurgler, Oswald, Mathias, Casper and Thomas Schmid; also one
brother, Melchoir Schmid of New Glarus, survives.

He reached the age of 76.

Funeral services were held at the Swiss Reformed Church Sunday afternoon,
Reverend G.D. Elliker officiating. A large number of mourning relatives and
friends showed their respects by attending the last rites. The pallbearers were
members of the local American Legion Post and the Women's Relief Corps attended
in a body.
