Born in Ditmarsche, Germany, to Franz and Anna (Deercks) Brandt, Henry (Heinrich) attended school there until he was 15. He arrived in Will County, Illinois in 1878 at the age of 20. In 1882 he moved to Anchor where he was employed as a farm hand. On March 27, 1883 he married Wilhelmina Frahm.

Henry rented at least 220 acres which he farmed. He later purchased an additional 120 acres. In addition to general farming, he raised draft horses and kept a number of cows, shipping the cream to Bloomington. Henry was one of the first in the area to have registered Holsteins, which he bought in Ohio.

Henry and Wilhelmina had 11 children, ten of whom survived to adulthood: John, Otto, Louis, Walter, Elsie, Albert, Amanda, August, Hermann, and Wilhelmina. Daisy died at 6 weeks of age.
