Lars Olaf Tullberg

Olaf Tullberg, one of the early pioneers of the Town of Morris, died suddenly last Thursday evening at the home of his son, Harry. The aged man had been active throughout the day and had performed various chores about the house, the last of which was to let the cows in the barn preparatory to milking. After having performed this task, he went to the house where only his two young grandchildren were at the time, and he complained of not feeling well; shortly after he appeared to be near a collapse and one of the children summoned help. By the time assistance had reached the house, the aged man had crawled to his bed and expired before medical aid could be obtained.

Lars Olaf Tullberg was born in Sweden on September 1, 1840 and was therefore eighty-three years of age at the time of his demise. He was united in marriage to Hedda Johnson while still in his native land. In later years he sailed for this country and located at Sprague's Mill, now a part of the Town of Morris. His family joined him shortly after he settled in this country. In 1887, seven years after their arrival here, Mrs. Tullberg passed away and plunged the family in the darkest grief. In 1890, he remarried and this time his bride was Oline Olson. His second wife died in 1901.

In 1903, he left this portion of the country and went to North Dakota, where he took a homestead and remained their [sic] for five years in which time he proved up the place and which is now listed among his possessions. He then returned here and has since made his home with his sons.

Seven sons and one daughter were the fruits of his two marital unions, three of whom are dead. The living are Gust. Harry, Henry, Einer, Carl and Alfred. The first three reside in Morris, while Einer is located at Long Beach, Cal.; Carl at Bismarck, N.D. and Alfred at Aberdeen, S.D. Twelve grandchildren and one great-grandchild are numbered among the survivors.

The funeral services were held at one o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the residence, after which the remains were taken to the Norway church. Rev. T.M. Rykken of the Indian Mission officiated at the last sad rites. Interment was made at the cemetery adjoining the church.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES
(By Gale Boetius Perez, Find a Grave Member 47724849)

Lars was my step-great-grandfather. I was able to find a great deal on his life through various genealogy resources (such as ancestry.com, and Shawano County Genealogy). I most gratefully acknowledge the help of the Swedish-American Genealogy Group on Facebook, for locating and translating the Swedish records mentioned below.

Lars was born in Röddinge, Malmöhus, Sweden on September 1, 1840 and christened on September 6. Lars' father was a gardener ("Trädgårdsmästare"), employed at Ekeröd, a large farm owned by a Lt. Colonel and Knight Henrik Rosencrantz.

Translated, Lars' birth record says, Gardener (master) Jöns Tullberg and his wife Karna Olssons son Lars Olof from Ekeröd. Suscept.(rix) {latin for godmother and used for "who carried the child"} Gardener's wife Catrina Olssons from Ekeröd. Teft.(es) {latin for witness} Gardener Lindström from Ekeröd och ladufogde {person that keeps the accounts or is the manager of a place} Ola Larsson from Christinetorp."

In May 1853, Nils and Karna moved their family from Abild to Ränneslöv, Sweden. (Abild B:2).

Lars married his first wife, Hadda Jonsdatter in Sweden at Jakob Och Johannes, Stockholm, on Sep 11, 1864 (source: Sweden Marriages 1630-1920, Indexing Project M41764-1, Sweden ODM, Source File 77761). Their first son, Gustave Augustus, was born in Sweden October 6, 1864.

On April 11, 1870, a "moving out" document completed in the parish of Jakob and Johannes in Stockholm, Sweden showed the couple, with their son Gustav, were moving from Sweden to Copenhagen, Denmark. Lars and Hadda's other three sons - Svend Harry, Niels Henry, and Olof Holger - were all born in Denmark.

Lars emigrated to the United States in 1882, and his wife Hadda and their four sons followed in 1883 on the SS Geiser. Hadda died four years afterward, in 1887.

Lars married his second wife, Oline Engebretsen (who went by "Olson," her father's surname, in the U.S.), on January 6, 1891, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Morris, Wisconsin. Oline's son Einer thus became Einer Tullberg (he later dropped the second "L" and went by Tulberg).

Lars' second wife Oline (my great-grandmother) died of "consumption" (tuberculosis) in 1901. He did not remarry.

Lars was naturalized on November 23, 1911, in Adams County, North Dakota. On May 23, 1912, he was granted a 160 acre homestead in Adams County (Principal Meridian 5, Township 131N, Range 092 West, SW 1/4 of Section 20), between Hettinger and Mott. Lars' first son with his second wife Oline (Carl) and his stepson Einer (my grandfather, Oline's son) lived with Lars during this time.

One of Lars' sons by his first wife Hadda was executor of his estate, and stated at the probate hearing that the land contained a granary, that a neighbor rented 50 acres of it, which brought in $75 a year in rents, and that the property was probably worth about $3,000. Lars' oldest sons Gustave and Harry had already received their inheritances before Lars' death, and Lars directed that the homestead was to be divided equally among his other sons Henry, Einer, Carl and Alfred.

Lars had lived with Henry in Henry's home in Navarino, Wisconsin, for the five years before his death, and he appointed Henry the executor of his will.
