Walter was the fourth child and fourth son of Heinrich (Henry) and Wilhelmina (Minnie) Frahm Brandt. English was not spoken in the home by the children until they went to public school. Walter probably attended school until age 10, when he was required to work on the family farm with his father and brothers. He loved playing baseball, played both first base and pitched for local ball teams, and scoured the Daily Pantagraph for baseball stories and scores.

Walter and Mathilda Hansen were married in Thornton, IA on June 1, 1916. They lived and farmed in Thornton until 1918, when Walter and Tillie moved to Anchor, Illinois to farm there. They had six children, four of whom survived to adulthood: Delmar, Virgil, Phyllis and Wallace.

Walter was a loving and devoted husband to Tillie who was frequently ill during her lifetime. He was active in the St. John's Lutheran Church of Anchor, was Sunday school superintendent, and consistent in his church attendance. Walter was cemetery trustee, and his son Wallace remembers the family being "backup" for digging graves if no other could be found! In 1934, Walter became a cooperator for the University Extension Service to keep farm records relating to grain farming and animal production. This he did faithfully for 26 years, until his death at age 56, of cancer.
